Cái Bèo Archaeological Site

Archaeological evidence suggests that humans have lived on Cát Bà Island for at least 6,000 years. The remains of an early settlement, known as Cái Bèo, are located about 2 km from Cát Bà town. French archaeologists conducted excavations there in 1972, 1973, 1981, and 1983. They discovered hundreds of artifacts, including grinding tools, net weights, chisels, and axes made of pebbles or coarse ceramics composed of clay and sand. Human remains and evidence of their dwellings were also found, indicating that the ancient inhabitants of Cát Bà belonged to the Hạ Long culture, which existed between 6,473 and 4,200 years ago. These early settlers were likely among the first to engage in marine exploitation and agriculture in the region.

The Legend of Cát Bà Island

Cát Bà, also known as Pearl Island, has a name rooted in local legend. The name "Cát Bà" is believed to have originated from "Các Bà" (meaning "The Ladies"). The legend tells that women on the island took on logistical support roles while the men fought on a nearby island, now called "Cát Ông" (The Gentlemen's Island).

Today, a temple dedicated to the women, "Các Bà Temple," stands in Cát Bà town. On administrative maps from the French colonial period (such as the 1938 map), the island was labeled "Các Bà." Over time, the pronunciation evolved into "Cát Bà."

Before 1977, Cát Bà was part of Cát Bà District. Later, this district merged with Cát Hải District to form the new Cát Hải District. Before 1945, Cát Bà was a town in Cát Hải District, Quảng Yên Province, later becoming a township and then a district capital in 1957 when Cát Bà District was officially established.

Climate of Cát Bà Island

  • Annual rainfall: 1,700-1,800 mm, varying by season. The peak rainy months are July and August.
  • Average temperature: 25-28°C, fluctuating by season. Summers can exceed 30°C, while winter temperatures range from 15-20°C, occasionally dropping below 10°C due to northeast monsoons.
